Vacation in Paradise

Back in June I flew down to Fort Myers to check out my sisters grand palace and see generally see how people keep busy down south.  Since I now consider myself to a be a fairly dyed-in-the-wool mountain man, I had my reservations about visiting one of the flattest states in The Union.  Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised.  While I was down there, we worked in some sea kayaking, paddle boarding, beaching, eating, drinking, and saw more wildlife in two days than I’ve seen in just about every New England hike I’ve ever been on put together.  The photos below hardly do justice.  But they’re still pretty good…  If in doubt, find someone who knows what they’re doing, and visit Florida with them.

Hell On Wheels!

A new sport graces the pages of 1water1coffee1beer: mountain biking!  Kelly talked me into this madness over the spring and it’s getting to be nearly as much of an addiction as skiing – and that’s saying something.  A few weekends ago, Kelly was in a race, and I decided to get creative with some cameras and gadgets.  After consulting Dad I set up my Canon point-and-shoot to a low ISO and a f-stop of 1/60 or 1/40; if you can manage to track the target during the exposure, you can get a relatively clear subject and a blurred background, giving the feel of rapid motion.  It’s going to take some practice, but some early action shots are below.

Also thrown into the mix is some remote controlled GoPro.  By hanging the GoPro from a tree and posting up, down the trail a bit, I could snag a few stills with my point-and-shoot before firing a 30-shot burst from the GoPro using the Android app, allowing me to capture a few choice angles of the action without having to be everywhere at once.  Check it out!

One Year To The Day

It was one year to the day since I’d first skied Big Jay, and now we were back for more.  On such an anniversary day, we couldn’t let the opportunity pass us by.  In fact, it was the first day Rob and I met Jen, and we’d skied it together.  Rob, Jen and I got to the top of the line early in the day, and figured we’d take our time getting down and snap some footage.  I think our efforts paid off.

Group Photo

Some kind stranger snapped our photo, and didn’t snap up our line.

Someone told us it was all tracked.  Lucky for us that wasn’t the case.

In fact, it was fresh and deep.

One of my favorite things about leaving the resort is that it feels like you’ve suddenly been transported to a winter wonderland.

Cold Smoke

The Jay Cloud was in full effect and we hit the road good and early for first chair on Saturday morning.  We scored first tracks on deliverance and found face-shots aplenty throughout the rest of the day.  With a few inches of refresher, Sunday was in nearly as good condition as Saturday with well over a foot of fresh over the entire weekend following roughly four feet during the previous week.  For day two we hit Big Jay, then made a slightly ill informed attempt at Gilpin, across the street from The Dip.  The results…well see for yourself!
